##### What is an agentic workflow?

An agentic workflow is a multi-step business process that uses one or more AI agents to help move work toward a defined outcome. From there, the agent or agents interpret the input, draw on approved tools or data, determine the next appropriate step, and route the work forward.

For example, an IT access workflow might receive an employee request for a finance system, check the person’s role against internal policy, identify the access level they need, send the request to the appropriate human approver, and update the ticket in line with the approver’s decision.

Traditional automation follows predefined logic. Teams set the rules, triggers, and actions upfront, and the system follows that configuration when the relevant criteria are met. Here are the core structural components that help agents progress work from the initial trigger to resolution or completion.

###### Workflow goals and triggers

An agentic workflow is designed around a specific business outcome. For example, the goal of an invoice exception workflow might be to determine whether a flagged invoice should be approved, corrected, or escalated.

A predefined trigger condition activates a specific instance of the workflow. In this example, a trigger might be a purchase order mismatch, missing or invalid vendor information, or a price, quantity, or tax variance.

###### Task decomposition and step sequencing

Agentic workflows operate within a defined set of permitted actions, handoffs, and boundaries. So while the agent itself does not create the workflow from scratch, it can interpret an incoming work item and determine which permitted step should happen next.

That pattern can repeat as the workflow progresses: the agent interprets the current state, selects the next permitted step, and continues moving the work forward.

###### Tool, system, and data access

Agentic workflows can only move work forward when agents have controlled access to the enterprise resources they need. Depending on the workflow, an agent may need to search a knowledge base, check a supplier record in an ERP system, retrieve account details from a CRM, update a ticket in a service platform, or create a review request in an approval system.

This access should be scoped to the workflow. The agent should only be able to use the tools, systems, and data required to support the workflow’s permitted actions.

As an agentic workflow progresses, each step needs access to the relevant context from earlier steps. This context is typically carried through the workflow state or case record, which may include the original request, current status, information already retrieved, and decisions already made.

This continuity helps the workflow move forward without treating each step as a separate interaction. The agent can use the current state of the work item to determine what still needs to happen, avoid repeating completed checks, and keep later actions aligned with the workflow’s intended outcome.

Agentic workflows should include clear paths for cases that require human input. The agent may be able to gather information, prepare a recommendation, or move a routine item forward, but some steps may still need to be routed to a human to review the output, approve an action, or decide how to handle an exception.

For example, a workflow might escalate a case when the agent cannot determine the right next step, when required information is missing, or when the next action appears to fall outside the workflow’s allowed actions.
